Redneck dreams

This is too funny to not post about, especially with the encouragement of our friend Ken. Ken and Michael both love beaters. The older and crappier the car (or motorhome I hear), the better. Don't ask me why, it just is. I have found Michael watching countless you-tube videos where a beater car is flying through a field or in a ditch and he's laughing uncontrollably. Then I find out that Ken often shows him pictures of new beaters he's found when they are at work (I guess this is how they pass some of the time). Here's a choice photo (I'm partial to stationwagons but this one is pretty beat up :-).We joke that we're going to get one. Maybe it's not a joke. The requirements are that it is free or super cheap and we won't get car insurance for it because Michael plans to beat it up so much that we won't have it that long to matter. This seems to contradict though with that fact that he tells me it would be a great family car...Maggie in the back smiling and giggling away, joined by her friends, cousins, or future siblings. We'd take it for joy rides on the weekends, up to Tahoe to haul back the Christmas tree, maybe out to the derby once in awhile. I know Michael wants to shoot at it too.

In high school, some of the guys I hung with drove these cars and I didn't think much of it because they were handed down in the family and we were poor high schoolers, so it was a way to get around. I especially remember our friend Ryan's car, with red velvet interior and it would softly bounce up and down as we drove. Ken has some lovely interior pics of cars he likes and here's a special one that reminds me of this high school car.Pat, if you read this and have a real picture, post it on your blog!

  1. Who is the Ryan? "Softly bounced as we 'drove'?" Riiiight.
Just in case some of the readers have a gem they are looking to get rid of I want to be clear. Although the beaut of the bullet ridden Ford above is nice I'm looking for something fullsize and a little older. You know, something that commands authority. It's got to have a V8 (the bigger and louder the better) and be rear wheel drive. Other than that all of my other wants are just those, wants. Sure a guy would love velvet interiors, wood siding and paneling inside and out, towing package, roof rack and cassette player but beggers can't be chosers. Rust, smoke and leaking drive train components are fine as is body damage. Just saying, incase you run across something.

  2. LOL. Best blog post ever! One of the older Cadillac slogans was "Cadillac, live the American Dream." Well, I too want to live the dream, but on the cheap. Michael did a good job describing what we want, now we just need to man-up and get one. Better yet, two so we can play contact-sports on the freeway. Okay, better stick with one because I do in fact need to keep my driver's license.

BTW, the blue wagon pictured above was posted for sale in a craigslist ad with the title "Drivers wanted." !!! 5-stars Marin!

  3. oh my gosh, i think i do have a picture somewhere but i'll never find it! mark and i driven beaters our whole marriage, except for one red volvo that was nice. every single one has been a wreck. I have two huge dents where cars slammed into my car and never said anything so i just drive with the big dents in an ugly green taurus to my job everyday...clients and coworkers think i'm a horrible driver, but the dents are certainly not from me. ahhhh! remember the painted van we just had in sac? for sure you guys need a beater. btw, i still miss daisy.
